◆ FIELD GUIDE No. 04 · PFlight · Qantas10 aircraft
Do Qantas planes have power outlets?
Yes on almost every Qantas jet — but what you plug into depends on the aircraft. The A380, 787-9 and most A330s have 110V AC sockets in every cabin — one per seat in business and first, usually one shared between seats in premium economy and economy — plus USB at the seat. The newest jets flip that around: the A321XLR has USB-A and 60-watt USB-C at every seat and no AC socket in either cabin, and on the QantasLink A220 it's business that goes without a socket while economy shares one per two seats. The gaps are the older 737-800s without seatback screens, where reviewers found no power, and the Dash 8 turboprops, which Qantas says have no USB or AC at all. Power banks: since 15 December 2025 you may carry two but not use or charge them on board.

Do Qantas planes have power outlets? Yes on the jets — but the socket is often shared, and the newest ones are USB-only.
Widebodies (A380, 787-9, A330): a 110V AC socket at every business and first seat, and AC in premium economy and economy too, usually shared — two for every three seats on the 787, one per pair in premium economy — with USB at every seat.
The A321XLR, Qantas' newest jet, has no AC socket anywhere. Every seat gets USB-A and a 60W USB-C port, which is enough for most laptops; business adds a wireless charging pad.
Domestic is a lottery: 737-800s with seatback screens have AC and USB, but reviewers on the older overhead-screen 737s found no seat power, and QantasLink's Dash 8s have none. The A220 has USB-A and USB-C at every seat.
Power banks: two per passenger, each up to 160 Wh (over 100 Wh needs approval), kept in the seat pocket or under the seat — and since 15 December 2025 you may not use them or charge them on board, including from the seat's USB port.

Every row below is a best guess until you sit down: Qantas swaps aircraft, and the socket that was there last month may not be there today. A bank under the 100Wh carry-on ceiling makes the whole table academic.

Every Qantas aircraft, cabin by cabin.
Find your aircraft on the booking or seat map first — the same flight number can be a different jet day to day. Where a cell reads Not listed, no source we can stand behind says that outlet is there or isn't; we'd rather tell you that than guess. Carry a bank for the gate and arrival regardless.

Qantas' newest jet has no AC socket in either cabin — and doesn't need one for most people. Every economy seat has USB-A and a 60W USB-C port beside a fold-down device shelf above the tray table, enough to charge most USB-C laptops. Business has USB-A and 60W USB-C under the centre armrest, a wireless charging pad, and a second USB-A/USB-C pair by the device holder. There are no seatback screens, so the device holder is your screen. A laptop that only charges from a wall plug won't charge on this aircraft.

The one Qantas aircraft where economy beats business for plugs. Every seat has USB-A and high-power USB-C beside a device holder, and business adds a wireless pad — but no AC socket. Economy has an AC socket down by the floor, one shared between every two seats. No seatback screens in either cabin: stream to your own device. Qantas doesn't publish the USB-C wattage for this aircraft.

Every cabin has AC, but only First and Business get a socket each: an AC outlet and a USB-A port beside the seat. Premium economy has two USB ports per seat and one AC socket per pair of seats. In economy the sockets are down by your feet — two for every three seats and three for every four — and each seat has a USB-A port at the tip of the armrest that a reviewer found painfully slow. Plug a wall charger into the AC socket if you can. No review we found mentions USB-C on the A380, and Qantas plans to start retiring the type in 2028.

Business has its own international power outlet and a USB-A port beside the seat. Premium economy has two USB-A ports per seat — one on the seatback, one in the armrest — and one AC socket shared between two seats; a June 2026 reviewer noted there's no USB-C. Economy has a USB port under your screen and two AC sockets for every row of three, between the seats (under the seat in bulkhead rows). If you need the socket, sort it out with your neighbours early.

The Business Suite has an international AC outlet and a USB port at shoulder height in the side console, but no USB-C: Qantas' own fleet page lists 'USB charging and AC power outlets' for the A330-300 Business Suite, while the A330-300Y sub-fleet is the one it describes with 'Dual USB-A and USB-C' — and a 2026 report on the related A330-200 refit noted the identical 2014-era Business Suite was 'lacking modern niceties such as USB-C power'. Economy has a USB-A port at the seat and AC sockets under the seats, shared. A 2023 reviewer found the USB fine for a phone and the AC socket as fast as a wall socket at home.

Same Business Suite as the A330-300: an AC outlet and a USB port in the console, no USB-C. Qantas lists 'USB charging and AC power outlets' in economy too, but not whether each seat gets its own socket, so bring a charger that works over USB. Qantas is refitting these jets with new economy seats that add a high-power USB-C port; the airline says the refit is 'coming soon', so don't count on it yet.

The only Qantas A330 with premium economy — two leased ex-Finnair jets. You can tell it by the business seat that goes from upright to flat with no recline in between. That seat has the best power on any Qantas A330: an AC outlet, USB-A, USB-C and a wireless pad. Premium economy has a USB-A port and an AC socket shared between seats. Economy has USB-A and USB-C at every seat; Qantas doesn't list an AC socket there, so don't count on one.

The rule of thumb on a Qantas 737: if there's a screen in the seatback, there's power. Business has an AC socket and USB-A in the centre console. Economy has a USB port beside the screen and a universal AC socket between each pair of seats. Qantas' own wording is 'shared AC power outlets on selected aircraft'.

The older 737s with drop-down screens overhead are the gap in the Qantas jet fleet. Two economy reviews, from 2018 and 2022, found no power at all at the seat. A 2025 review says Qantas 737 economy has USB under the seat, but doesn't say which version it flew, so treat USB here as possible, not promised. Business always has USB; the AC socket is 'on select aircraft'. On some Brisbane routes Qantas texts you within 24 hours of departure if your 737 has no seatback screens — take that as your cue to charge everything at the gate. A cabin upgrade adding new seats with charging is set to fly from 2028.

No seat power at all. Qantas says so on its own economy page: 'No USB charging or AC power outlets available', and no inflight entertainment either. You also can't use a power bank on board, so board a Dash 8 charged.
§ 04The power-bank ruleEffective 15 December 2025
Carry it. But you can't use it in the air.
Applies on every Qantas, QantasLink and Jetstar flight, domestic and international. The Qantas Group announced it in November 2025 and it took effect on 15 December 2025; Qantas' dangerous-goods page carries the same rules today. Qantas moved before the rest of the industry: its ban took effect on 15 December 2025, after an internal safety review, three months before ICAO's own two-bank limit arrived in March 2026.
01Two power banks per passenger, each up to 160 Wh. Up to 100 Wh (roughly 27,000 mAh) needs no approval; 100–160 Wh needs Qantas' approval and has to be declared at check-in. Over 160 Wh is freight only.
02You may NOT use a power bank on board: 'Power banks cannot be used or charged during the flight, including via in-seat USB ports.'
03You may NOT charge it from the seat — USB or AC. It boards full or not at all.
04Keep it within reach: in the seat pocket or under the seat in front. Qantas allows a nearby overhead locker only where that isn't possible, such as bulkhead and exit rows.
05Carry-on only, and the battery specifications must be printed on it. A bank found in checked baggage will be confiscated or disposed of at the airport.

◆ Quirk 01
The newest Qantas jets have no plug socket
The A321XLR has no AC socket in business or economy, and the A220's business cabin has none either. What they have instead is USB-A and USB-C at every seat, with the XLR's USB-C rated at 60 watts, which is enough for most laptops. If your laptop only charges from a wall plug, check the aircraft before you fly.
◆ Quirk 02
On a 737, look for the seatback screen
Qantas' 737-800 fleet comes in two versions. The ones with seatback screens have an AC socket between each pair of economy seats and USB. On the older ones with drop-down screens overhead, reviewers in 2018 and 2022 found no seat power at all. On routes out of Brisbane, Qantas texts you within 24 hours of departure if your 737 has no seatback screens. If that text arrives, charge everything at the gate.
◆ Quirk 03
The socket is 110V, and your Australian plug should fit
Qantas' seat sockets supply 110V AC at 60 Hz, capped at 75 watts, and Qantas has described them as accepting 'Australian 2 or 3 pin, European 2 pin, Japanese 2 or 3 pin and USA 2 or 3 pin' plugs, with UK plugs needing an adaptor. Frequent flyers add two warnings: an Australian plug sometimes has to be rotated after it goes in, and wide-pin European plugs don't fit. A 2019 review found a First socket that wasn't universal. Most laptop and phone chargers accept 110V, but check yours says 100–240V.
◆ Quirk 04
Economy shares the socket on every Qantas widebody
On the A380, 787-9 and A330, economy has AC, but not one socket per seat. On the A380 it's two for every three seats and three for every four; on the 787 it's two per row of three. Premium economy on the A380 and 787 shares one socket between two seats. On both, each seat has its own USB port. If you need the socket for a laptop, agree with your neighbours early.
◆ Quirk 05
A220: economy has the socket, business doesn't
On QantasLink's A220, business has USB-A, USB-C and a wireless pad but no AC socket. Economy has the same USB ports plus an AC socket shared between every two seats, down by the floor. It's the one Qantas aircraft where the cheaper seat gets the wall plug.
◆ Quirk 06
Jetstar is a separate airline for this purpose
Jetstar is part of the Qantas Group and follows the same power-bank rule: two banks, none used or charged on board, since 15 December 2025. Its aircraft and seats are its own, though, and nothing in the table above comes from a Jetstar aircraft. If your flight number starts with JQ, check Jetstar's seat map before counting on power.
§ 06The Qantas flight packPower bank first
One bank first, then three backups.
Qantas bans using a power bank in flight and charging one from the seat, so in the air you have the seat. On the A380, 787 and A330 that means a 110V socket, usually shared, plus USB. On the new A321XLR and A220 business it means USB-A and USB-C with no socket at all. On an older 737 without seatback screens, or a QantasLink Dash 8, it can mean nothing. The bank is for the gate and the connection; the cable is for the seat; the GaN charger is for the sockets that exist.
A 20,000 mAh USB-C bank under 100 Wh is the most useful thing to pack for a Qantas trip. You can carry two but not use them in the air, so its job is everything either side of the flight: the gate, the connection and arrival.

§ 07Questions about Qantas powerReal answers
Do Qantas planes have power outlets?
Most do. The A380, 787-9 and most A330s have 110V AC sockets in every cabin — one per seat in business and first, shared between seats in premium economy and economy — plus USB at the seat. The newest aircraft, the A321XLR, has no AC socket but has USB-A and 60W USB-C at every seat. On domestic flights, 737-800s with seatback screens have AC and USB, older 737s with overhead screens may have no seat power, and QantasLink's Dash 8 turboprops have none at all.
Does Qantas economy have power outlets?
On the widebodies, yes, but shared. On the A380 there are two AC sockets for every three seats and three for every four; on the 787-9 two per row of three; on the A330-300 they're shared under the seats. Each seat has its own USB port. On the A321XLR economy is USB-only (USB-A and 60W USB-C), on the A220 there's one AC socket per two seats plus USB-A and USB-C, and on the Dash 8 there's nothing.
Can I use a power bank on a Qantas flight?
No. Since 15 December 2025 Qantas, QantasLink and Jetstar ban using a power bank on board and charging one, including from the seat's USB port. You may carry two, each up to 160 Wh (over 100 Wh needs Qantas' approval), in carry-on only, with the battery specifications printed on them. Keep them in the seat pocket or under the seat in front; an overhead locker nearby is allowed only where that isn't possible, such as bulkhead and exit rows.
Does the Qantas A321XLR have power outlets?
No AC socket, but excellent USB. Every seat, business and economy, has USB-A and a USB-C port rated at 60 watts, enough to charge most USB-C laptops. In economy the ports are beside a fold-down device shelf above the tray table; business has them under the centre armrest, a second pair by the device holder, and a wireless charging pad. There are no seatback screens, so you stream to your own device.
Do I need an adapter for Qantas seat power?
Usually not for Australian, US, European two-pin or Japanese plugs. Qantas has described its 110V seat sockets as accepting those, with UK plugs needing an adaptor. Frequent flyers report that an Australian plug sometimes has to be rotated after inserting it and that wide-pin European plugs don't fit. The sockets supply 110V at 60 Hz with a 75W cap, so check your charger is rated 100–240V.
Which Qantas planes have USB-C?
The A321XLR (60W USB-C at every seat), the QantasLink A220 (USB-C at every seat), and the two ex-Finnair A330-300s with premium economy, where business and economy have USB-C. The A330 Business Suite has no USB-C, and 787-9 premium economy is USB-A only. We found no report of USB-C on the A380. Refitted A330-200s will add USB-C in economy, but Qantas says that refit is still 'coming soon'.
Do Qantas domestic flights have power?
It depends on the aircraft. The A220 has USB-A and USB-C at every seat and a shared AC socket in economy. The A330s on domestic routes have AC and USB. On the 737-800, seatback screens mean power — a shared AC socket per pair in economy — while the older overhead-screen 737s may have none. QantasLink's Dash 8s have no USB or AC at all. On some Brisbane routes, Qantas texts you within 24 hours if your 737 has no seatback screens.
Does Jetstar have the same seat power as Qantas?
Not necessarily. Jetstar is part of the Qantas Group and has the same power-bank rule — two carried, none used or charged on board, since 15 December 2025 — but it flies its own aircraft and cabins. Nothing on this page is sourced from a Jetstar aircraft, so check Jetstar's own seat map if your flight number starts with JQ.
