Question 01 · The connection

"Can I plug my 50A RV into a 30A pedestal?"

Yes — with a 50M→30F dogbone. You get 3,600 W instead of 12,000 W. Translation: one A/C, no microwave + water heater simultaneously. Two 30A outlets cabled together is widely discouraged on iRV2 — both 30A usually share the same pedestal feed.

Camco PowerGrip 55175 is the Mike Sokol endorsed default. Skip unbranded auction-site dogbones.

Question 02 · The protection

"Do I really need a $300 EMS over a $30 surge protector?"

Yes. The $30 hockey-puck catches lightning spikes — rare. It does not catch open neutral, reverse polarity, open ground, or low voltage — common. One full-timer lost $8,000 in damage to a single bad pedestal that an EMS would have caught.

Forums call this '50A 240V' but it's split-phase — most RV loads still run on the two 120V legs, not 240V. Branch circuit: #6 AWG, 50A double-pole breaker.

Is a $300 EMS really worth it over a $30 surge protector?

Yes. The $30 hockey-puck surge protector catches lightning and transient grid spikes — both rare. It does not detect the actually-common pedestal faults: open neutral (can spike RV voltage from 120V to 200V), reverse polarity with broken ground (energizes the chassis with 120V AC, lethal under wet conditions), open ground, low voltage. What's the difference between an EMS and a Hughes Autoformer?

Different categories. A Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X cuts off when it detects a fault — total protection, no compromise. A Hughes Autoformer boosts voltage at chronic low-voltage parks (down to 95V minimum) and includes surge protection but does NOT cut off on faults. Experienced full-timers often run both in series — Watchdog/EMS for fault detection, Autoformer for low-voltage boost.

Do I need lithium batteries or are AGM fine?

LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) has displaced AGM for almost all RV boondocking use as of 2024-2026. The math: ~10× cycle life, half the weight, full 100% usable capacity (vs ~50% on AGM before damage). A LiTime 100Ah lithium delivers more usable energy than two 100Ah AGMs at lower weight. The only reason to stick with AGM in 2026 is if your existing charger is genuinely incompatible — most modern converters handle LiFePO4 with a profile switch.

What's the biggest mistake boondockers make with power?

Running the absorption refrigerator on the inverter when propane is available. An absorption fridge sips about 3 amps DC for controls when running on LP. Switch it to AC mode while boondocking and the inverter pulls ~40W idle just to stay on, plus the actual fridge AC draw cyclically — easily 100+ amp-hours per day on a system that should be sipping from propane. Second most common: forgetting that the inverter itself draws ~40W idle even with nothing plugged in.

Are generators allowed in National Parks?

Depends on the park and the campground. Yosemite permits generators 7–9 a.m., 12–2 p.m., and 5–7 p.m. only. Yellowstone permits them at four campgrounds (Bridge Bay, Canyon, Fishing Bridge RV Park, Grant Village) and bans them entirely at six others (Indian Creek, Lewis Lake, Mammoth, Slough Creek, Tower Fall, Pebble Creek). Always check the specific campground page on nps.gov before booking — the rule varies by site, not just by park.

Does the California gas-generator ban affect my RV trip?

Not yet. California's SORE (Small Off-Road Engines) rule applies to the SALE of new small gas engines starting 2028 — delayed from the original 2024 target. You can still operate any existing gas generator you already own. Out-of-state RVs entering California are unaffected. Don't write off a 2026 RV trip over a ban that hasn't taken effect.
