Math anyone can do: Watt-hours = (mAh ÷ 1000) × Voltage. For 3.7V lithium-ion cells, divide mAh by 270 to estimate Wh. A 20,000 mAh power bank = ~74 Wh. A 26,800 mAh = ~99 Wh, still under the cabin limit. A 30,000 mAh = ~111 Wh, into the approval-needed band.

Three unwritten rules every café owner expects you to know.

Most café conflict between nomads and owners isn't about laptops at all — it's about outlets, table-time, and a quiet expectation around how much coffee equals how much workspace. Once you know the three rules, you stop being the table everyone wants to seat someone else at.

RULE 01

The 90-minute coffee

One drink per 90 minutes of outlet use is the unwritten European café rate. Stay longer, order again. The 4-hour solo workday on one €2.50 espresso is the move that gets you politely asked to leave.

RULE 02

The back-corner outlet

Outlets in cafés are clustered at the back two tables and along one wall. They were installed for staff. Don't move tables around to reach them — sit where the outlet already is, or buy a longer USB-C cable.

RULE 03

The co-working honesty test

Most 'co-working spaces' on Instagram are cafés with branding. Real ones publish their wattage policy, outlet count per seat, and backup-power story. If a space doesn't mention any of those, treat it as a café.

Q. 01

What does a digital nomad actually need for power?

Five pieces solve the entire problem: a universal travel adapter, a 65W+ USB-C PD GaN charger, a 20,000 mAh power bank, a travel surge protector, and a set of USB-C cables. Total cost: $120–$180. Everything else is preference. This kit covers 190+ countries, every laptop class up to 16-inch, and one full workday off-grid.

Can I bring my power bank on a plane?

Yes, if it's under 100 Wh (≈27,000 mAh at 3.7V) — that covers every standard nomad power bank. It must be in your carry-on, never in checked baggage. Power banks between 100 and 160 Wh require airline approval and are limited to two per passenger. Anything over 160 Wh is banned on commercial flights, period.

Is a 65W charger enough for a MacBook Pro?

Yes for the 14-inch (which ships with a 70W charger and charges fully at 65W in about 2.5 hours). The 16-inch model can use a 65W charger but charges slowly; 96W is the spec'd charger. For nomad use, 65W is the sweet spot — small enough to pocket, powerful enough for everything except heavy workloads on a 16-inch laptop.

Which countries need a voltage converter, not just an adapter?

None, for a modern nomad. Every USB-C laptop, phone charger, and camera battery charger made after 2015 is dual-voltage (100–240V) — they only need a plug-shape adapter. Voltage converters are required only for legacy 110V-only appliances like older hair dryers, curling irons, and electric kettles. If everything in your bag is USB-C, you never need a converter.

Do I need a VPN as a digital nomad?

On hostel WiFi, café WiFi, and any open network — yes. These are unencrypted by default; everything you type travels readable across the network. A VPN encrypts the link end-to-end. Also useful for streaming services that geo-lock content (Netflix UK from Bali, etc.) and for accessing banking services that flag foreign IPs.

Q. 06

Should nomads buy single-trip or annual travel insurance?

Annual, once you're traveling more than 60 days a year. Annual nomad-focused policies (Heymondo, SafetyWing, World Nomads) cover unlimited trips up to a set length each, run cheaper than booking single trips back-to-back, and don't require buying coverage every time you cross a border. Check the per-trip length cap — most annual policies max out at 90 days per trip.
