World Electrical Standards

Complete reference table for 190+ countries — voltage, frequency, and plug types at a glance.
Understanding World Electrical Standards
Voltage: 110-120V vs 220-240V
The world is divided into two main voltage standards. North America, Japan, and parts of South America use 110-120V, while Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia use 220-240V. Using a device designed for 120V in a 240V country without a converter can damage or destroy it.
Frequency: 50Hz vs 60Hz
Electrical frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz). Most of the world uses 50Hz, while the Americas and parts of Asia use 60Hz. Modern electronics usually handle both, but some older motorized devices may run at incorrect speeds.
Plug Types A through O
There are 15 different plug types used around the world, labeled Type A through Type O. Some countries use multiple types depending on the building's age or region. Always check both the plug type AND voltage requirements before traveling.
