◆ FIELD GUIDE No. 04 · AFlight · Lufthansa10 aircraft
Do Lufthansa planes have power outlets?
Yes — but it depends entirely on the aircraft. Lufthansa's newest Allegris cabins (A350-900 and 787-9) carry AC, USB-A and USB-C; the A380 and older wide-bodies have AC + USB-A up front and slow USB-A — or a shared outlet — in economy; and the legacy short-haul A320-family jets often have no in-seat power at all. Since 15 January 2026 you also can't use a power bank in flight, so the seat outlet is your only in-air charge.

Do Lufthansa planes have outlets? Mostly yes — on the right aircraft.
AC mains (110V): the A380, both A350 variants, the A330-300 and the 787-9 — but almost always in the premium cabins. Economy AC is rare, usually USB-only or a single outlet shared between two seats.
USB-C: only the new Allegris cabins (A350-900 and 787-9). Allegris Business adds a 60W fast-charge USB-C plus a wireless pad.
The short-haul gap: legacy A319 / A320 / A321 jets with the older Recaro seats have no in-seat power at all — only the newest neo jets add USB-A.
Power-bank USE is banned in flight from 15 January 2026. You may still carry two (each ≤100Wh), but they stay in your seat pocket — and the seat outlet is your only way to charge in the air.
§ 02Flight cover · Before the boarding passDelays · missed connections · lost bags
Don't fly uninsured.
A delayed Lufthansa connection, a missed onward flight, a bag that lands a day after you do — three things the fare doesn't refund. Single-trip cover is the minimum; annual makes sense past two trips a year.
§ 03Power by aircraftAC · USB-A · USB-C, per cabin
Every Lufthansa aircraft, cabin by cabin.
Find your aircraft on the booking or seat map first — the same flight number can be a different jet day to day. Where a cell reads Not listed, no source we can stand behind says that outlet is there or isn't; we'd rather tell you that than guess. Carry a bank for the gate and arrival regardless.

Older 747-8 configuration. Economy has one AC outlet shared between two seats and no USB at all — the worst charging setup in the wide-body fleet. Premium-cabin power isn't reliably documented, so those cells read as unknown.

§ 04The power-bank ruleEffective 15 January 2026
Carry it. But you can't use it in the air.
Applies group-wide: Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels, Eurowings, Discover, Edelweiss, Air Dolomiti and ITA Airways. It mirrors the ICAO direction the whole industry is moving toward — carriage is fine, in-cabin use is not.
01You may still CARRY power banks — up to 2 per passenger, each ≤100Wh (roughly 27,000 mAh). 100–160Wh needs prior airline approval; over 160Wh is forbidden.
02You may NOT use a power bank to charge a device in flight, and you may NOT charge the power bank itself in flight.
03Store it on your person, in the seat pocket, or in your carry-on under the seat in front — never in the overhead bin or checked baggage.
04The only permitted in-flight use is powering an essential medical device.

◆ Quirk 01
Short-haul power is a retrofit lottery
The older A319 / A320 / A321 with Recaro seats have no in-seat power. Only the newer A320neo / A321neo with Geven slimline seats add USB-A — and even some neo jets still fly the older seats with nothing. On a short-haul Lufthansa leg, assume no power until you've checked the seat map.
◆ Quirk 02
Same flight number ≠ same hardware
The Allegris cabin (economy USB-C, wireless charging up front) is only on some A350-900 and 787-9 frequencies. A route can be an Allegris jet one day and a legacy jet the next, so the seat power you get is decided by the specific airframe — confirm the equipment at booking, not the flight number.
◆ Quirk 03
Legacy wide-body economy AC is shared and inconsistent
Where an economy mains outlet exists on the older fleet it's usually split between two seats (747-8) or even three (some A350), and on the A330 / A340 / 747-400 it's genuinely hit-or-miss. A short cable and a USB hub turn one shared outlet into charging for two.
◆ Quirk 04
The 2026 twist: you can't top up with a power bank in the air
Since 15 January 2026 Lufthansa bans USING a power bank in flight (medical devices excepted). So the seat outlet is your only in-air option — check the table above to see whether your aircraft has one, and pack a bank for the gate, the layover and arrival rather than the cruise altitude.
§ 06The Lufthansa flight packPower bank first
One bank first, then three backups.
With in-flight bank use banned, the seat outlet is your only air-side charge — and half the fleet doesn't guarantee one. So the bank leads for the gate and arrival, the GaN charger handles the outlets that do exist.
A 20,000 mAh USB-C bank under 100Wh is the single most useful thing to pack. You can carry two, and it covers the gate, the layover and arrival — where the outlet-only rule can't touch you.

§ 07Questions about Lufthansa powerReal answers
Do Lufthansa planes have power outlets?
On most long-haul aircraft, yes — but it depends on the exact plane and your cabin. The A380, both A350 variants, the A330-300 and the 787-9 have AC (110V) mains outlets, almost always in the premium cabins; economy is usually USB-only or a single outlet shared between two seats. The newest Allegris cabins (A350-900, 787-9) add USB-C. Legacy short-haul A319 / A320 / A321 jets often have no in-seat power at all.
Which Lufthansa aircraft have USB-C?
Only the new Allegris cabins — the A350-900 and the 787-9. Allegris Business has a 60W USB-C fast-charge port plus a wireless charging pad, and Allegris economy has both USB-A and USB-C. Every other Lufthansa aircraft (the A380, legacy A350, A330-300, 747-8) is USB-A generation with no USB-C.
Does Lufthansa economy class have power outlets?
It varies by aircraft. Allegris economy (A350-900, 787-9) has USB-A + USB-C but no AC mains outlet. A380 economy has slow USB-A only. The 747-8 has one AC outlet shared between two seats and no USB. Legacy short-haul jets often have nothing. If you need to charge in economy, plan around USB — a mains outlet in coach is the exception, not the rule.
Can I use a power bank on a Lufthansa flight in 2026?
You can carry one — up to 2 per passenger, each under 100Wh — but you cannot use it in the cabin. Since 15 January 2026 Lufthansa Group bans using a power bank to charge a device in flight, and bans charging the bank itself, with an exception only for essential medical devices. Keep it on your person, in the seat pocket or under the seat in front — not in the overhead bin. The seat outlet is your only in-air charging option.
Do Lufthansa short-haul flights have power or USB?
Often not. The legacy A319 / A320 / A321 (ceo) jets with Recaro seats have no in-seat power at all. Only the newer A320neo and A321neo with Geven slimline seats add USB-A, and even some neo aircraft still fly the older seats. There's no AC mains outlet on the short-haul fleet. On a Lufthansa short-haul leg, charge fully before boarding.
What is the Allegris cabin and does it charge better?
Allegris is Lufthansa's new long-haul cabin, rolling out on the A350-900 and 787-9 from 2024 onward. It's the best charging on the fleet: Business gets a universal AC outlet, USB-A, a 60W USB-C fast-charge port and a wireless pad, and economy gets USB-A + USB-C at every seat. The catch is the rollout — it's only on some frequencies, so the same route can be an Allegris jet one day and a legacy jet the next.
What voltage are Lufthansa's AC outlets, and can I charge a laptop?
Where a mains outlet exists it's 110V US-spec, like almost every airline seat outlet worldwide, capped at roughly 75–100W. A standard ultrabook charges fine; a high-wattage gaming laptop can trip the seat breaker. On Allegris the 60W USB-C port is fast enough for most laptops on its own. Bring a small USB-C GaN charger and you're covered on any aircraft that has an outlet.
