History

Thailand developed Type O to solve the problem of tourists bringing various plug types. Rather than forcing visitors to use adapters, Thailand created a universal outlet that accepts multiple plug standards while maintaining safety with a grounding option.

Safety

Type O outlets feature a recessed design with a grounding option. The versatile socket design accepts multiple plug types but maintains safety standards. Modern Thai outlets include child safety shutters.

Compatibility

Type O outlets accept Type A, B, C, and O plugs. This makes Thailand one of the most adapter-friendly countries for travelers. However, Type G (UK) and some European grounded plugs may still require adapters.

§ Common questions
What is the Type O plug?+

Type O is the official standard plug for Thailand. It's a hybrid system that can accept plugs from many different countries including Type A, B, C, and O itself. The Thai outlet is designed to be highly versatile for tourists.

Which countries use Type O?+

Type O is used in Thailand and across Southeast Asia. See the full list below.

Is the Type O plug grounded?+

Yes. Type O has a dedicated grounding pin for safe operation with appliances that require an earth connection.

Do I need a voltage converter for Type O countries?+

Type O countries operate at 220V, 50Hz. Modern dual-voltage electronics (phones, laptops, cameras labelled "100-240V") work everywhere with just a plug adapter. Single-voltage appliances from a different voltage zone need a converter.

Can I use my iPhone or laptop charger with Type O?+

Yes. Apple chargers and most laptop power supplies are dual-voltage (100-240V), so they work in Type O countries with just a plug adapter — no converter needed.
