◈ FIELD GUIDE No. 13Summer · 9 festivals · 1 fallow yearEdition: June 2026

Six days off-grid, a phone you still need to find your tent.

Tomorrowland charges your phone at DreamVille. Burning Man has zero infrastructure. Reading and Leeds run free charging tents. Sziget has queues by day three. Glastonbury skips 2026 entirely. This is the verified, per-festival, per-watt reference — plus the airline rule that rules out most power stations.

§ 01The two questionsAsked on every festival sub-reddit, every spring

Two recurring blockers. Honest answers.

Question 01 · The capacity

"What size power bank do I actually need?"

Multi-day camping with no infrastructure (Tomorrowland, Sziget, Bonnaroo): 20,000–25,000 mAh floor. Day-only urban with hotel return (Lollapalooza, Outside Lands): 10,000 mAh covers one day per phone. Burning Man: the bank is the backup — primary is a 300–1,000 Wh power station with a solar panel.

Signal congestion is the hidden killer. Airplane mode when you're not actively using the phone.

Question 02 · The carry-on

"Can I bring a Jackery on the plane?"

Almost never. Carry-on lithium ceiling is 100 Wh without airline approval, 100–160 Wh with approval (max 2 spares). The Jackery Explorer 300 is already 293 Wh — over the limit. Largest airline-legal power bank is around 27,000 mAh (~99.9 Wh at 3.7V). Drive-in festivals are fine; fly-in attendees rent locally.

Reno rental suppliers stock Jackery and EcoFlow stations through Burning Man week. Don't fly with the station.

§ 05The festival packFive items, multi-festival

One power station. One bank. A week of light.

The drive-in kit for Tomorrowland and Burning Man, the airline-legal kit for Reading and EDC. Everything in the niche we wrote, none of the marketing fluff.

01

Jackery Explorer 1000 power station

1,002 Wh · pure sine · LiFePO4

The base-camp battery that takes a Tomorrowland or Burning Man weekend without the Wh-limit airline drama. Drive-in only — too big for carry-on. Pairs with the SolarSaga 100 below for sustainable multi-day camp power.

02

Jackery SolarSaga 100W panel

100W rated · 50–80W actual · foldable

The one solar panel that meaningfully recharges a battery in a day. Tested 50–80W actual output — half the marketing claim, but enough for ~400 Wh/day of harvest in peak desert conditions. Burning Man kit, not Reading-tent kit.

03

Anker Prime 25,000 mAh power bank

92.5 Wh · USB-C PD · airline-legal

Under the 100 Wh carry-on ceiling, no airline approval needed, 25K mAh = roughly 5 phone charges. The Anker 737 replacement after the 2025 discontinuation. The right tool for Reading, Lollapalooza, EDC.

04

Clip-on USB tent fan

10,000 mAh built-in · waist clip · USB-C charge

Burning Man heat hits mid-90s. A 10K-mAh waist-clip fan is the difference between sleep and a tent sauna. Plan for one-festival lifespan — playa dust kills bearings. Cheap enough to treat as consumable.

05

USB-rechargeable LED string lights

10m · warm white · IP65 weather-rated

Camp identity + finding your tent in a Burning Man dust whiteout. Sealed rechargeable systems (no loose battery casings) keep you compliant with Leave No Trace. Same lights work for Tomorrowland DreamVille and Sziget Ville.

§ 06Solar realityWhen it works, when it doesn't

The honest math on solar power banks.

Daily Wh recoverable = panel watts × peak-sun-hours × 0.75 system loss. Built-in 1–2W solar power banks recover ~5 Wh per day of full sun. A 74 Wh bank needs roughly 13 sun-days to fully recharge from sun alone. Don't lie to yourself.

Solar works

Burning Man — 5–6 peak-sun-hours, 7 days, zero alternative

Real foldable panel (Jackery SolarSaga 100, Goal Zero Nomad 100) paired with a 300–1,000 Wh battery genuinely covers daily draw inside the desert week. Dust on the panel costs you watts — squeegee morning and evening. Field-tested 50–80W actual output on the SolarSaga, 38–70W on the Nomad.

Solar is decoration

UK festivals + short urban festivals

Overcast British summer, three free charging tents, charging stations within 200 metres. Solar panel ROI is negative. A 10K–25K mAh USB-PD bank plus the free top-ups carries you. Same logic for Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Coachella (hotel return), EDC (hotel commute).

§ 07QuestionsFrom festival sub-reddits
What size power bank do I need for a multi-day camping festival?

20,000–25,000 mAh is the floor for a 3–5 day camping festival with no infrastructure (Tomorrowland DreamVille, Sziget general, Bonnaroo). For day-only urban festivals with hotel return (Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Coachella), 10,000 mAh per phone per day works fine. For Burning Man, the power bank is the backup — the primary is a 300–1,000 Wh power station with a solar panel.

Can I bring a Jackery or portable power station on the plane?

No, almost never. The TSA / IATA carry-on limit for lithium batteries is 100 Wh without airline approval, 100–160 Wh with approval (max 2). The Jackery Explorer 300 is already 293 Wh, well above the limit. The largest airline-legal power bank is roughly 27,000 mAh (≈ 99.9 Wh at 3.7V). Drive-in festivals work fine for big power stations; fly-in attendees rent locally (Reno for Burning Man, regional rental for European festivals) or accept a smaller bank.

Is Glastonbury happening in 2026?

No. 2026 is a fallow year — the festival doesn't run. Glastonbury returns June 23–27, 2027. Many "Glastonbury 2026" pages online are SEO bait or refer to side events. Verify against glastonburyfestivals.co.uk before booking accommodation or planning travel.

Are solar power banks worth it for festivals?

Mostly no, with one exception. The integrated 1–2W panel on a typical "solar power bank" recovers about 5 Wh per day of sun — a 20K mAh bank (74 Wh) needs ~13 full sun-days to recharge from solar alone. They function as emergency trickle chargers, not as primary power. The exception is Burning Man: 12+ hours of direct desert sun + a real foldable panel (Jackery SolarSaga 100, Goal Zero Nomad 100) genuinely pays back inside the week. At UK festivals it's just decoration.

Do UK festivals have charging tents?

Yes. Three UK provides free phone charging at Reading and Leeds. Charge Candy runs power-bank swap rentals at both for ~£20 plus £10 refundable deposit. Glastonbury (in non-fallow years) runs the Vodafone Connect & Charge tents with free 30-minute slots plus a paid battery-pack hire service. UK festival power infrastructure is genuinely good — a 10K mAh bank plus free top-ups beats lugging a 25K bank around all weekend.

What's the real Burning Man power plan for 7 days?

Tier the plan by usage. Phone + headlamp only: Jackery Explorer 300 (293 Wh) with one mid-trip solar top-up covers the week. Phone + USB fan + camp lights: Jackery Explorer 1000 (1,002 Wh) plus the SolarSaga 100W panel — daily harvest covers daily draw. Camp-powered (sound system, fridge, multiple fans): an EcoFlow Delta Pro plus a 200W+ array, often multiple units. The hidden constraint: anything over 100 Wh is non-flyable, so fly-in attendees rent in Reno (Reno suppliers stock through August) or drive in.

Why does my phone battery die so fast at festivals even with full signal?

Phone signal congestion. When tens of thousands of people are at one venue, mobile networks saturate and phones go into continuous "signal search" mode — the single biggest hidden battery drain. Mitigations: airplane mode + Wi-Fi only when not actively using the phone, pre-download the festival map and lineup, disable background app refresh, lower screen brightness. Vodafone reported a 30% data usage increase at Glastonbury 2024 — that congestion is the real reason a 20% battery falls to 0% in two hours.
