How CHAdeMO got its name and lost the war.

CHAdeMO was established in March 2010 by TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power), Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Toyota β€” Japan's industrial consensus on a single fast-charging standard. The name is a Japanese pun: "o cha demo ikaga desuka?" β€” "how about a cup of tea?" β€” suggesting that charging takes about as long as a tea break. It became the world's first widely-deployed DC fast-charging standard.

From 2010 through roughly 2018, CHAdeMO was the global default. Every Nissan Leaf had a port. Public DC chargers in Europe, North America, and Asia overwhelmingly used it. Then CCS overtook β€” and the structural reason was the connector design itself. CHAdeMO is DC-only and requires a separate AC port on the vehicle, so EVs needed two different ports for AC home charging and DC fast charging. ChaoJi is the heir, not the replacement (yet)
The next-gen ChaoJi standard (joint Japan-China project, sometimes called "CHAdeMO 3.0") targets 900+ kW and is designed to be backward-compatible with both CHAdeMO and GB/T. As of 2026, real-world ChaoJi deployment is limited to a few pilot sites. Don't plan around it for trips this year.

CHAdeMO needs a separate AC port
Cars with CHAdeMO can't use it for home charging β€” they need a Type 1 (J1772) or Type 2 port for AC. This is why every CHAdeMO-equipped EV has two visibly different charging ports on the body, often confusing first-time owners or rental customers.

Adapters between CHAdeMO and CCS are rare and expensive
If you have a CHAdeMO Leaf and the only nearby fast charger is CCS, you're mostly stuck. Aftermarket CHAdeMO-to-CCS adapters exist but cost $1,500+ and aren't supported by most networks. The reverse (CCS car at CHAdeMO station) is even less common.
