§ 01 · Quick answer

Do you actually need an adapter for Jakarta?

One paragraph, no detour. Read this and you have 80% of what you need.

Jakarta uses Type C (Europlug, two round pins) and Type F (Schuko, two round pins with side grounding) outlets with 230V at 50Hz. European travelers can usually plug in directly. US, UK, and Australian travelers need a plug adapter. Modern chargers are dual voltage and work with just an adapter.

§ 02 · Hotel outlets

What you'll actually find behind the bedside table.

How outlets vary across Jakarta's hotel categories — luxury, mid-range, hostels, and Airbnbs.

Hotels in the Golden Triangle (Thamrin, Sudirman, Kuningan) cater to business travelers and generally have standard Type C/F outlets. High-end properties like The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Mandarin Oriental, and Hotel Indonesia Kempinski sometimes offer USB ports or multi-standard panels. Budget hotels and guest houses in Kota Tua, Kemang, and Menteng have basic two-pin outlets. Grounded three-pin outlets are not always available in older buildings.

§ 03 · If you forgot one

Where to buy an adapter on arrival.

Specific stores, transit landmarks, and price ranges in Jakarta — not generic "ask your hotel" advice.

Adapters are widely available at Ace Hardware, Electronic City, and Informa stores in malls like Grand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia, and Central Park. Prices range from IDR 30,000-80,000 ($2-$5). Alfamart and Indomaret convenience stores occasionally carry basic adapters. Soekarno-Hatta Airport (CGK) has electronics shops in arrivals, but expect to pay more.

§ 04 · Voltage and frequency

Why the wall matters more than the plug.

The plug shape decides whether it fits. The voltage decides whether it survives. Two different problems.

Standard voltage
230V

High-voltage region. Dual-voltage devices (rated 100–240V) work safely with just an adapter. Single-voltage 120V appliances from the US or Canada need a step-down converter.

AC frequency
50Hz

Same frequency as Europe, Asia, and Australia. Modern electronics handle both 50Hz and 60Hz without issue.

Adapter ≠ converter.

A plug adapter only changes the shape of the prongs. It does not change the voltage. Always check the label on your device or charger for “INPUT: 100–240V” before plugging in.

§ 05 · Charging tips

What works in Jakarta (and what doesn't).

Notes from the road. Local-only quirks our country guides don't catch.

  • 01Jakarta traffic can mean 2-3 hours in a car, so bring a car charger or power bank for ride-hailing trips
  • 02Gojek and Grab cars sometimes have USB ports, but do not count on it
  • 03Power outages are rare in central Jakarta but happen more often in suburbs and during heavy storms
  • 04Coworking spaces and cafes in SCBD, Menteng, and Kemang usually provide outlets at every table
  • 05Indonesia uses 230V so European devices plug in directly, but US devices need dual-voltage verification
§ 08 · FAQ

Questions readers actually ask us.

Real questions from inbox replies — answered without hand-waving.

Can I use a European plug in Jakarta?Open

Yes. Jakarta uses Type C and Type F outlets, which are the same standard as most of Europe. European two-pin plugs (Type C/Europlug) fit directly into Indonesian outlets. Grounded Schuko plugs (Type F) also work in newer buildings.

Will my US charger work in Jakarta?Open

US flat-pin plugs do not fit into Indonesian round-pin outlets. You need a US-to-European adapter. However, most US phone and laptop chargers are dual voltage (100-240V), so once you plug in with an adapter, they work safely on 230V.

Is Jakarta's electricity reliable?Open

Central Jakarta (business districts like Sudirman, Thamrin, and SCBD) has reliable electricity with rare outages. Outer areas and older neighborhoods experience occasional brief power cuts, especially during heavy rainstorms. Hotels with generators are unaffected. A small surge protector is a good idea for older buildings.
